How We Get Sick!
And How Homeopathy Can Help
When a person falls ill either chronically or acutely, it is never a pleasant experience. Why and how does a person get sick? The most common belief about sickness is that there is something wrong or that something is attacking us like a microbe of some kind. That’s why we are always in a battle against whatever disease we want help with such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, arthritis and so on. Many of the medications are designed to fight against symptoms, to suppress the symptom like antihistamines, antidepressants, antibiotics, etc. “Anti” means against. This is the modern mechanistic, chemical view of life. This view shapes our modern medical research to invent medications that fight and battle illness.
What about a vitalistic view. I would like to propose that a big part of life is about surviving. Just being able to adapt to everyday circumstances such as weather, temperature, what we eat, and people in general. In order to be alive we have to survive. In order to survive we have to adapt. If the room is hot, our body has to modulate the temperature internally to keep functioning normally. If a person insults another, we must adapt to that insult. If the insult hurts enough, it will be felt emotionally, physically and mentally. Sometimes the insult is traumatic such as a divorce or a cheating spouse. Some of these situations are very difficult to adapt to, very hard to live with. The adaptation process or ability to survive this insult strains the person. Guess what happens? Symptoms are created, sadness, lethargy, headaches, bellyaches, etc. Symptoms are used to identify the fact we are not feeling well. Symptoms are caused by a person straining to adapt to the situation. We all have different adaptative abilities. For instance a cheating spouse may invoke anger, disinterest, violence, weeping etc. Each human when stressed has a unique way of dealing with the problem.
Okay, so now we understand how symptoms are created, it is reaction to the insult. The insult could be a bacteria or a virus. As you know, if exposed to a microbe not everyone becomes sick. If your body has to strain against the microbe, then symptoms will appear. Of course I know this is a simple explanation but it is the reaction or the adaptation to the insult that causes a problem. Fever is one example of our reaction to a microbe. It’s about the ability to survive.
Are you with me so far? I would like to introduce the concept of a series of adaptations that react to each other that keeps us sick.
Each of these segments represents a certain type of adaptation. Now imagine if the adaptation took place on the mental and emotional spheres not just the physical. For instance stiffness in the mind may be rigid thinking. Paying too much attention to details. Compelled to move could be a restless mind that is hard to turn off. The whole person becomes trapped in the cycle and ultimately feels ill.
If the treatment is just to dull the pain, the cycle is still intact and constant pain killers are needed to try and keep this survival mechanism at bay.
WOULDN’T IT BE BETTER TO CHANGE THE CYCLE OF SICKNESS??? This is the how a person becomes ill. I know there are millions of chemical reactions in the body and these reactions are because of the cycle not the other way around.
Here is an example: I have treated many kids with ear infections. A mom brings her 6 month old to me, the child is screaming in pain, red faced, with a high fever. I give a homeopathic remedy and in 10 to 15 minutes the child is asleep and no longer bothered by the ear infection. Is the ear infection gone? No! The body’s reaction to the inflammation in the ear drum has changed. Inflammation no longer leads to pain. Over the next few days the inflammation subsides seamlessly and the child no longer has the propensity to ear infections.
A homeopathic medicine has the ability to change the cycle and give permanent relief to many health issues.

Many people categorize homeopathy under holistic medicine or alternative medicine. In reality homeopathy is a vitalistic approach to wellness. Homeopathy was discovered by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the 1700’s. In his time, a substance called Cinchona bark was used to cure Malaria in Europe. The theory of the times was that its bitter properties were the reason for the cure. Dr. Hahnemann didn’t agree with that assessment. He wanted to understand why cinchona bark could help this ailment.
Dr. Hahnemann did something no one ever did before; he dosed himself with the bark even though he was in good health. What took place made history. Upon dosing himself he began to have symptoms of malaria even though he did not have malaria.
From this event he deduced a law which homeopaths call the Law of Similars. If a substance in large doses can cause a problem, that same substance in small diluted doses can cure you. Hahnemann knew that Cinchona Bark helped some patients with malarial symptoms; Hahnemann himself though was in good health yet after dosing himself he began having symptoms which were similar to the disease.
This event was called the first proving. It proved how a medicine performed on a well person. Over the next few hundred years homeopaths proved many substances.
The discovery of the law of similiars paved the way for sick people to get well, not just manage their disease. In fact, by using this principle homeopathy was able to treat many of the horrible epidemics that killed so many people in Europe.
Homeopathy is used by millions of people in the world from Europe, Asia, North America, South America to Africa. In fact, there are some countries which have incorporated Homeopathy into their national health care systems.
We live a wonderful technological age with the ability to diagnose and find problems in the human body. Yet most of our modern treatments are managed care. Pain killers, anti depressants, anti inflammatory etc. Homeopathy is designed to stimulate the body so the problem goes away.
